Colour Printing - by a Cardiff Printer.

Four aluminium plates are clamped into the press - each of them showing a shadowy grey image. The four ink trays each are filled with vibrant blue, pink, yellow and black inks and the cylinders start to roll. Even now after twenty five years in the print industry, I still think the full colour litho printing process is quite magical and never quite get used to the fact that such crisp, complex images can be produced from these four simple coloured inks.

The industry has changed a great deal since we started Lighthouse Printing in1985. At that time the full colour printing process involved making four films, one for each of the CMYK colours, before printing even began. It was a time-consuming, costly process. Setting up the press was done without the help of today’s computer assisted plate loading and registration devices. It took time - and skill. Although the customer wanting say, 5,000 annual reports or 20,000 A4 leaflets or brochures still got a good deal, most people needing 100 full colour business cards, 250 A5 fliers or 500 letterheads found it a prohibitively expensive business. In our experience in Cardiff, most of the stationery and publicity material bought by small and medium sized businesses in those days was one or two colour. How times change..... Now because of digital platemaking and computer assisted presses, small runs of full colour print are becoming more and more affordable.

At Lighthouse Printing now, we can now supply small runs of business cards, fliers, business stationery, postcards, folders, postcards and a host of other products at a fraction of the cost you would have expected to pay ten years ago - even allowing for inflation.

Another innovation of course that has helped the tendency towards low prices in the production of full colour is the advent of digital print. There are various ways of producing a full colour job using a digital process but the basic difference is that litho print uses ink and digital print uses toner. Digital print used to be the poor relation of litho but the gap is closing very quickly.
It is now possible to print high quality digital print in a matter of a few seconds and for very small quantities, digital print is now king. Also at Lighthouse Printing, business cards, postcards, flyers and other digitally printed jobs can be matt or gloss laminated using a very cheap but effective process - giving a job in which the job is protected from scuffing and has a very prestigious ‘feel’ at a price which we believe is lower than anyone else in Cardiff.

There have been a lot of changes in full colour printing over the last twenty five years - who knows what the next twenty five will bring!
